Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

If you have missing teeth, dental implants are small titanium screws placed into your jaw and tooth-supporting tissues to hold your replacement teeth in place.

While removable dentures or a fixed dental bridge rest on top of your gums, dental implants act as your tooth roots, so they hold your prosthetic teeth comfortably in place.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants can fully restore the natural look, feel, and function of your teeth. Because Dr. Madani places implants directly into your jaw, they become an integrated part of your mouth in a way that alternative options simply can’t match.

Some of the most important benefits of dental implants include:

Durability

Removable dentures and fixed bridges typically last 5-10 years before they need replacing. Meanwhile, dental implants can last for 25 years or more in most cases.

Comfort

Because dental implants don’t rest on top of your gums, they won’t irritate your tooth-supporting tissues.

Appearance

Removable dentures don’t always fit your mouth as well as your natural teeth. Because dental implants bond to your jaw, they look natural.

Speech

Missing teeth and removable dentures can increase your saliva production, which can promote a slight lisp or cause you to slur your words. Dental implants, on the other hand, function just like your natural teeth to improve your speech.

Chewing

Chewing with dentures puts pressure on your gums, causing pain and irritation. With dental implants, you can eat and drink as you normally would.

Oral hygiene

There are no special instructions for caring for dental implants. You can brush and floss just like your natural teeth.

What is the process of placing dental implants?

Dental implants take several weeks to plan and place. Using a combination of dental exams, digital X-rays, and other scans, Dr. Madani can determine the best placement areas for your implants.

Because dental implants require a substantial amount of healthy bone to support the restorations, Dr. Madani may recommend a bone graft prior to the implant procedure if you’re lacking bone density in your jaw.

When you come in for your placement appointment, Dr. Madani uses either local or general anesthesia to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible. Once your mouth is completely numb, he places your implants into your jawbone.

It takes about 6-12 weeks for your mouth to fully heal from the implant procedure. Once your implants have completely bonded to your jawbone, Dr. Madani takes impressions of your mouth to create your new replacement teeth.

At your final visit, he connects the replacement teeth to your implants to restore your bite. With dental implants, you can chew, speak, and smile with confidence.
