A dental crown is a cap-shaped tooth restoration that fits perfectly over your damaged tooth to protect it from further injury and revitalize its appearance to match the rest of your existing teeth.
Dr. Madani may recommend a crown for your tooth if you have:
Many patients also opt for crowns to change the shape of their teeth to help their smile look polished and uniform.
There are several types of dental crowns to choose from, depending on the severity of your tooth damage and location.
All-porcelain or all-ceramic dental crowns are popular amongst patients who want a natural-looking crown that perfectly matches the rest of their teeth. They are especially appealing to those with metal allergies. Because porcelain crowns are not as durable as their metal or gold counterparts, they are recommended for your front teeth rather than molars.
Metal crowns are strong, durable, and last for several years. They are best suited for patients with damaged teeth in the back of the mouth. However, they are not recommended for the front teeth, as they cannot be color-matched to fit in with the rest of your teeth.
Offering the best of both worlds, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have a metal base that is covered in porcelain, ensuring it is both natural-looking and strong. Over time, however, the porcelain on your crown can chip or break, exposing the metal base underneath. The metal may also show if you suffer from gum recession.
Gold crowns are extremely strong and durable, providing years’ worth of protection for your damaged teeth. These crowns rarely break or chip, so they are perfect for patients with tooth damage in their molars.
Once you decide that a dental crown is the right option for you, Dr. Madani will remove some of the enamel from your existing tooth to make room for your new crown. Next, he will take impressions of your tooth, which are sent off to the lab to serve as a model for fabrication. The dental crown fabrication process takes approximately two weeks, during which time Dr. Madani will fit you for a temporary crown.
When the crown is created and sent back to Dr. Madani, he will remove your temporary crown and place the permanent crown. After making the right adjustments, he will cement your new dental crown into place. If no further adjustments are needed, your new crown should look and feel just like your natural teeth.
